The Dark Night of the Soul

They call it the dark night of the soul
When the soul falls into a pit of despair
Where it cannot feel God
Although God is still there

In that place of eternal night,
Not hell.
But a place where the soul can't feel the light
And prayer doesn't come easy
Much to the devil's delight.

There shadows of life's troubles abide
And surround the child of light.
Whose soul strains towards the tunnel
Where it sees a flickering light.

Eyes half closed it struggles
On all fours it crawls;
Surviving only because of an innate desire
Planted by the Father,
To find,
And love, our Lord.

redflame2008~*

beautiful...a real deep read, just what I needed 2-nite, something like this to ponder on....a dark night of the Soul, indeed...I have been there, in that dark abyss, reaching out for that shaft of light, always there but seemingly so far away during that time where the night is so dark...wishing to be bathed in His light and love again, in its entirety....'to find and love our Lord', indeed...that 'innate desire planted by our Lord', love those lines....well said, something inside us all that will always be trying to find its way home, a life long journey and one that is always reaching out to the Lord, seeking Him with all of our heart and mind and soul and strength, especially during those dark nights of the soul......God Bless UR steps~*

some other lines that spoke to me:

""There shadows of life's troubles abide
And surround the child of light.
Whose soul strains towards the tunnel
Where it sees a flickering light.""

The flow of this was just magic, I can not speak for anyone else but I know that I have experienced this "dark night of the soul and I must say you describe as though you have been there as well. But all praise be to God that he has provided a way of escape for us all. this was beautifully done.

Many of us can relate to this poem.... I know I ,for one, can. I realize that I read certain poems for a reason and I feel like this one in particular spoke to me. I feel like it's telling me that I need to got out of that darkness and into the light. I feel these lines:

When the soul falls into a pit of despair
Where it cannot feel God
Although God is still there
--------------------------------------------------------
Sounds like God is telling you to tell me this..... tsk tsk tsk,

But anywho, I loved the poem...now i gotta go work on that "getting out of the darkness" thing...

got me thinking as many shall experience this... needing to continue to nuture thy relationship with the lord but sometimes allowing the devil to reap havoc... yes making one ignore the word, yes his whispers from afar... the good thing is one can defeat this, and yes proudly bow down... say a prayer while the lord takes center stage...

Soar - Thankyou for your comments!

SellmeCandy - I feel humbled that my piece spoke to you...I know you will find your way out of the darkness....

P.rose - Yes I have been there, many a time. But God won't let me linger there too long. Thank goodness, he refuses to let me or anyone else stay in that place for too long.

Mr A - yes, the devil does whisper but prayer will conqueror all...

Bless you All....May your way be guarded by angels....

Redflame....

Interesting write inded as your opening words pulled me in immediately

They call it the dark night of the soul
When the soul falls into a pit of despair
Where it cannot feel God
Although God is still there

This piece as a while I enjoyed immensely because it spoke to me personally. I'd be lying if I said that I have never found myself in this place, but I'd also be lying if I said that i didn't feel God's hand lifting me and carrying me through. This is my reason for highlighting the above two lines, because as far away in feeling they are...they're beyond close in meaning and depth. When we are at our lowest is when our Father is closest. Yes, we will all go through our trials and tribulations, but it is at those moments when He is their. His word says that he will NEVER allow the righteous one to totter. Reading pieces like this make me recall the words of the psalmist when he begged God to search through him and MAKE him know his ways.....and how beneficial this proved to be...the same proves true with us in that we need to beseech all the same. Beg him to never allow us, no matter how dark it seems, to forget that he is there.

Your conclusion....what a vivid picture you've painted. I read this and again it was as if i was really watching this...atching someone crawling trough a dark tunnel, that flicker of light being their hope. I know I do no justice to your piece by "trying" to quote so ...

Eyes half closed it struggles
On all fours it crawls;
Surviving only because of an innate desire
Planted by the Father,
To find,
And love, our Lord.

What joy and freedom I felt upon reading the last line. A feeling of relief, and a sense of warmth.
I thank you so much for sharing this piece, for allowing me to re-think and re-feel what was felt when I was here. This is a reminder to us all in a way....but a personal thank you to you redflame.

Labu - thankyou, as always for your comments.

Ladylyric - I understand what you say about the first two lines. You are quite right in what you say but for me, the lines describe how I have felt at times: God is there throughout my troubles but sometimes I hurt too much to be open, to be still, to 'hear him'...Thank you for the 'personal thankyou'. It's wonderful when people take time out to read and constructively comment on pieces. It means a lot to me.wavey25

This was a perfect poem at the right time. It truly spoke to me because I am going through something like that right now. You can only suppress such a strong desire like needing the approval of Jehovah in your life for so long before it consumes you. Real good write.

I loved this poem. I think that most can relate to this poem-those who believe. Most people who are in despair, cannot see the light and so many give up. But rising above our flaws through strength and determination can bring us to the light. At some point in our life, we face great challenges and sometimes we feel stuck, but overcoming will reap its rewards. I think that small challenges won't do us any good, but big challenges that require a HUGE transformation is worth the struggle in order to help others and this society..

I liked how you started the poem off
They call it the dark night of the soul
When the soul falls into a pit of despair
Where it cannot feel God
Although God is still there
